Team Formation for U6–U8

(No Grading)

Fun, Friends & Fundamentals

Teams in Mini League are built around fun, friendships and confidence.

We form teams using:

Friend Groups -  Parents may nominate 2–3 friends to help keep kids playing with familiar faces.

Balancing Numbers- Teams are kept even in size and general ability (but not graded).

Player Wellbeing - consider confidence levels, brand-new players, and any kids who may benefit from additional support.

Our focus in Mini League is simple: FUN, teamwork and confidence.

Skills, Growth & Pathways

*Policy Below*

For the 2026 season, Avalon Bulldogs JRLFC will be implementing an updated and more consistent team grading system to support fairness, player development, and well-being across the club.

Grading will only occur in age groups where more than one team is registered

When We Grade

  • Grading applies only when an age group has multiple teams.

  • Mini League (U6–U8) is not graded — teams are formed based on friendships, balance, and player confidence.

What Grading Looks At

During pre-season grading sessions, we aim to understand each player’s overall readiness for the year.

Assessments include:

  • Basic skills

  • Confidence

  • Effort and attitude

  • Game awareness and understanding

Coaches from the previous season will also provide input, alongside a short review period supported by an independent third party where required.

How Teams Are Formed

Once assessments are complete, players will be placed into teams that best match their:

  • Skill level

  • Confidence

  • Development needs

  • Physicality and game understanding

This ensures every player is placed where they can learn, grow and enjoy the game.

Safety First

Player welfare is our top priority.

Grading ensures:

  • Kids are matched with teammates and opposition at a suitable level

  • Players feel supported, not overwhelmed

  • A safer and more enjoyable footy environment

  • Fair and consistent team structures across the club

Why Grading Works

  • Kids develop at different speeds

  • Placing players at the right level helps confidence and enjoyment

  • Clearer development pathways for all players

  • Avoids mismatched competitions and mid-season regrading

  • Supports long-term player retention and progression
